Overview
Parents and guardians frequently need access to their children’s lab results, yet Sonora Quest’s (SQL) existing process required manual intervention, phone calls, and internal system updates by Health Information Management Services (HIMS) staff. To modernize this experience, SQL partnered with i-ology to design a secure, fully digital workflow that allows guardians to request, manage, and view minors’ results online.
The Challenge
The manual, staff-driven process for minors’ test results access was slow, inconsistent, and costly.
Guardians experienced friction and confusion, leading to support calls and delays in receiving important health information.
Identity validation and linking workflows lacked automation, creating security and compliance risk.
HIMS had no efficient, centralized interface for troubleshooting or managing minor/guardian relationships.
SQL needed a scalable, secure, patient-friendly solution that reduced operational overhead.
The Approach
i-ology collaborated with Sonora Quest Laboratories to deliver an end-to-end digital experience for guardians, integrating identity validation, workflow automation, and results access.
Discovery and Strategy
Conducted workshops with HIMS, digital product, and compliance teams to map the existing manual workflow.
Identified failure points, inconsistencies, and friction in the guardian verification process.
Defined success parameters focused on security, automation, transparency, and self-service.
Guardian Authentication & Access Request Workflow
Built guided workflows requiring account creation, KBA (Knowledge-Based Authentication), and EMPID (Enterprise Master Patient Identifier) validation.
Designed and implemented a secure request form posting directly to SQL APIs for processing.
Provided clear, on-screen SLA (Service-Level Agreement) guidance to set accurate expectations and reduce support calls.
Dashboard Integration for Guardians
Enhanced the patient dashboard to display:

Ensured seamless navigation using soft SSO (Single-Sign-On) patterns.
Automated Notifications and Status Updates
Implemented automated SMS/email alerts for approvals, expirations, and new results availability.
Ensured guardians remained informed without requiring staff follow-up.
HIMS Administrative Tools
Built a minors-specific management interface within Umbraco for HIMS staff.
Included utilities for lookups, proxy access, and correction of mis-linked minors.
Added blocking controls to prevent incorrect results associations.
